Kuwait committed to sustainable development, energy efficiency: Dr. Al-Zamel

Undersecretary of the Ministry of Electricity, Water and Renewable Energy, Dr. Adel Al-Zamel, has reaffirmed Kuwait’s commitment to sustainable development and enhancing energy efficiency as part of its broader strategy to combat climate change.

Accompanied by Kuwait’s Ambassador to Belgium and Head of Mission to the European Union and NATO, H.E. Nawaf Al-Enezi, Dr. Al-Zamel made these remarks during Kuwait’s participation at the 10th World Energy Efficiency Conference, organized by the International Energy Agency (IEA), held in Brussels on June 12–13; highlighting Kuwait’s pioneering role in the region, noting that it was one of the first Gulf countries to adopt an Energy Efficiency Code as early as 1983, reports Al-Rai daily.

The code, he said, has been continuously updated over the past four decades, leading to a reduction of more than 30 million tons of carbon dioxide emissions.

He announced the launch of a newly simplified version of the Energy Efficiency Code aimed at expanding its implementation across all sectors. This initiative paves the way for a future advanced edition based on cutting-edge technologies to improve nationwide energy performance.

Al-Zamel emphasized the Ministry’s leadership role in shaping Kuwait’s national energy strategy, particularly through its chairmanship of the Higher Energy Committee.

This committee brings together stakeholders from both the public and private sectors and works through three technical working groups focusing on energy efficiency, renewable energy, sustainability, and energy security. The goal is to develop innovative initiatives aligned with Kuwait’s energy and climate objectives.

As part of Kuwait’s efforts to foster regional cooperation, Al-Zamel announced that the country will host the Gulf Forum for Electricity and Water Conservation in November 2025. The event will include the inauguration of the GCC Excellence Award in Energy Efficiency for Buildings, recognizing innovation and leadership in designing and operating high-efficiency structures.

He also revealed Kuwait’s scheduled participation in the Gulf-European Conference on Energy, Renewable Energy, and Energy Security, to be held in Brussels in late 2025, underscoring Kuwait’s ongoing commitment to global collaboration in the energy transition.

Al-Zamel concluded by reiterating Kuwait’s determination to work with regional and international partners to accelerate the energy transition, strengthen resilience, and secure a sustainable future for generations to come.
