Kuwait mulls ship-based power stations to tackle power shortage in summer

As part of its ongoing efforts to rationalize consumption, the Ministry of Electricity, Water and Renewable Energy is currently looking at several options to address the anticipated power shortage during the summer, by choosing the most technically and financially viable solutions.

Sources told Al-Rai that one of the options under consideration is a proposal from a foreign company to supply power to the national grid through ship-based power stations. The ministry is re-evaluating this offer to assess its feasibility and its impact on the national grid if the connection is implemented.

The sources added that the ministry is intensifying efforts to find swift and effective solutions to the crisis while minimizing losses, emphasizing the importance of efficient electricity use and curbing waste, particularly during peak hours, to help meet national energy demands and reduce budgetary pressure—freeing resources for future permanent power plant projects.

If consumers cooperate by limiting the usage during peak hours, the sources said, up to 1,000 megawatts could be conserved—significantly more than the 600 megawatts the ship-based stations are capable of providing.
