Kuwait, Russia call for action on maritime border issues with Iran
Foreign Minister Abdullah Al-Yahya and Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov discussed outstanding issues between Kuwait and Iraq, focusing on historical misconceptions surrounding the Iraqi Federal Supreme Court’s decision on the Khor Abdullah Agreement.

Kuwait and the Russian Federation reaffirmed their joint commitment to promoting stability and security in the region and globally, as reported by Al Qabas newspaper.
This statement emerged during official talks between Foreign Minister Abdullah Al-Yahya and his Russian counterpart, Sergei Lavrov, held in Moscow as part of their official visit and accompanying delegation.
At the beginning of the talks, Al-Yahya conveyed the warmest greetings of His Highness the Amir Sheikh Meshal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah and His Highness the Crown Prince Sheikh Sabah Khaled Al-Hamad Al-Sabah to the President of the friendly Russian Federation, Vladimir Putin.
He also extended the greetings of His Highness Sheikh Ahmad Abdullah Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah, the Prime Minister, along with those of the government and people of Kuwait, to the leadership, government, and people of the friendly Russian Federation.
Al-Yahya expressed Kuwait’s wishes for continued development, prosperity, and progress for Russia and its people, praising the historical relations that have fostered six decades of close cooperation and a strong strategic partnership.
Strengthening relationships
For his part, Lavrov conveyed his best regards to Kuwait’s political leadership, appreciating the deep ties between the two countries and their peoples. He expressed pride in the distinguished friendship and existing strategic cooperation with Kuwait across various fields.
During the official talks, the two ministers discussed frameworks for enhancing bilateral relations and advancing their mutual development. They explored strategies to realize the visions of both leaderships for greater progress and a future that reflects their aspirations while serving the common interests of their nations and peoples.
They also addressed the latest developments in regional and international arenas, particularly the escalating situation in the occupied Palestinian territories, including the dangerous escalation in the Gaza Strip and the military aggression by Israeli forces against Lebanon, along with their violations of Lebanese sovereignty.
They discussed ways to strengthen joint cooperation to support international efforts aimed at halting the ongoing escalation, preventing the conflict from expanding, and intensifying diplomatic and political actions. These actions would ensure safe crossings for humanitarian and relief aid to those in need and promote joint efforts toward finding a just and comprehensive solution to the Palestinian issue, thereby establishing peace and stability in the region.
Demarcation of borders
The two sides discussed the latest developments regarding outstanding issues between Kuwait and the Republic of Iraq, particularly the repercussions of historical misconceptions related to the decision of the Iraqi Federal Supreme Court on the Khor Abdullah Agreement.
They also addressed the need to complete the demarcation of the Kuwaiti-Iraqi maritime borders beyond Mark No. 162, as well as the necessity of resolving the maritime border demarcation file between Kuwait and Iran. Additionally, they examined the Syrian crisis and international efforts to find a political solution that alleviates the suffering of the Syrian people.
Furthermore, the two sides reviewed regional and international issues of common interest and reaffirmed their joint commitment to promoting stability and security in the region and the world.
