Kuwait’s Mubarak Al-Kabeer Port set for major expansion after council approval
Project to include new zones for port services, industries, and infrastructure, driving economic growth
• The Municipal Council’s technical committee has approved the expansion of Mubarak Al-Kabeer Port.
• The expansion will significantly increase the port’s size and capacity. The project is expected to boost Kuwait’s economy and maritime trade.
The Municipal Council’s technical committee has given the green light to the Ministry of Public Works’ request to expand the land allocated for Mubarak Al-Kabeer Port, reports Al-Rai newspaper.
Engineer Munira Al-Amir stated that the ministry’s request met all necessary requirements for a new allocation, encompassing the required expansions for Mubarak Al-Kabeer Port on Bubiyan Island. This decision amends a previous allocation decision dated April 17, 2006 (No. M.B/F 7/145/8/2006). Notably, a similar request was submitted in 2018 but was not previously decided upon by the Municipal Council.
Eng. Al-Amir added that after discussing the matter with relevant parties, examining the accompanying documents, and reviewing the technical opinions and relevant authorities’ views, the committee voted to approve the expansion request from the Ministry of Public Works.
This amendment will increase the total allocated area to approximately 11,616.195 hectares, divided into zones for maritime navigation, the marine port (divided into three phases), port services, a connecting road, government uses, a free zone, light industries, a temporary support zone for storing construction and excavation materials, and a right-of-way for the regional road and railway.
The committee emphasized the importance of adhering to environmental protection laws, coordinating with relevant government agencies, and coordinating with the Silk City Development Authority, as is customary, to authorize the relevant department to adjust the new boundaries according to approved plans.
Eng. Al-Amir concluded by stating that such large-scale projects are considered key drivers of the economy in all countries. Given Kuwait’s excellent geographical location on the Arabian Gulf, the committee carefully scrutinized the Ministry of Public Works’ request.
The aim is to transform this project into a qualitative leap in Kuwait’s maritime and commercial transportation, bolster the national economy, and restore Kuwait’s prominent position in managing and operating maritime ports.
