Abdali border port handles half a million travelers in eight months

The surge in traveller numbers is linked to several religious events, the most recent being the 40th-day commemoration of the martyrdom of Imam Hussain ibnAli bin Abi Talib, peace be upon them, in Najaf and Karbala.

As many as 72,340 passengers crossed the Abdali border port to perform the Arbaenwalk between August 15 and 25.

Colonel Waleed Faleh Al Azmi, director of the Abdaliborder port, revealed that nearly half a million travelers have crossed the port to and from Iraq since the beginning of this year up until August 28. He noted that this surge is linked to several religious events, the most recent being the 40th-day commemoration of the martyrdom of Imam Hussain ibn Ali bin Abi Talib, peace be upon them, in Najaf and Karbala, the Al Rai newspaper reported.

Colonel Al-Azmi told Al-Rai newspaper that the number of travelers who crossed the Abdali border port in the last eight months is unprecedented and has not been witnessed by the port in past years. He noted that 72,340 passengers crossed the port to perform the walk between August 15 and 25.

He said that the increase in travel through the port began after entry into Iraqi territory was permitted, facilitated by the events of the 25th Arabian Gulf Cup (December 2022 – January 2023).
