Former Kuwait based cultural activist T.K. Haris passes away

Despite being bedridden, the respected senior expatriate continued to actively share his perspectives on various social issues through new media.

  • T.K Haris , an expatriate for over 50 years, was known for his deep understanding of Middle Eastern politics. His 1980s writings on the Palestine issue and critiques of Israeli occupation and Zionist terrorism offered Malayalis a profound perspective for their struggles.

T.K. Haris, a respected former Kuwait based senior expatriate from Kozhikode, passed away after a prolonged battle with cancer. Despite being bedridden, he continued to actively share his perspectives on various social issues through new media.

During his expatriate life in Kuwait, T.K. Haris played a crucial role in the formation of the cultural organization ‘Kala Kuwait.’ He was actively involved in promoting cultural publications like ‘Desabhimani Varika’ among expatriates and regularly wrote columns on political analysis.

T.K. Haris, who spent over half a century living abroad, had a deep and precise understanding of West Asian political issues. His writings in the 1980s on topics like the Palestine issue were highly noted. His candid discussions on issues such as the inhumane Israeli occupation and Zionist terrorism, which have devastated entire communities, provided Malayalis with a profound and motivating perspective for their struggles.

Always aligned with the left in cultural activities, T.K. Haris firmly supported the cultural criticism positions raised by M.N. Vijayan in the 1990s. He took a strong stance against deviations in mainstream leftist cultural movements and became one of the main critics after the assassination of T.P. Chandrasekharan.

Haris supported the formation of Janadhipathyavedi, established by K.S. Bimal and others, and served as an executive member. He also played a key role in founding the M.N. Vijayan Study Center and was actively involved in cultural-political activities centered in Kozhikode. His observations following a visit to Vietnam were notable, as he shared with comrades the pain of resisting imperialist ideologies in a land marked by revolutionary sacrifice against Ho Chi Minh and American opposition.

Despite his severe illness, Haris shared his concerns about contemporary social life with visiting friends, rather than focusing on his own pain.

Final respects are being paid to a life that united the community through a grand cultural-political journey.
