Kuwait suspends gas treatment units, warns of possible power cuts

The Ministry of Electricity, Water, and Renewable Energy said it may cut off the power supply to some non-residential areas if necessary, to maintain the stability of the electrical system in the country.

The suspension of gas treatment units by the Kuwait National Petroleum Company led to a decrease in the quality of gas supplied to certain electricity generation and water distillation units.

On Saturday afternoon, the electrical load index reached a record high of 17,000 megawatts due to the country’s elevated temperatures.

The Ministry of Electricity, Water, and Renewable Energy announced the total suspension of gas treatment units by the Kuwait National Petroleum Company on Saturday morning. This suspension led to a decrease in the quality of gas supplied to certain electricity generation and water distillation units, according to Al Qabas newspaper.

Accordingly, the ministry reduced the electrical load on those units to preserve the electrical system. “The gas processing units have been operated by the Kuwait National Petroleum Company, and the situation is being monitored,” a ministry statement said.

On Saturday afternoon, the electrical load index reached a record high of 17,000 megawatts due to the countrys elevated temperatures. In response, the ministry has urged consumers to reduce their electricity use during peak hours.

The ministry stated that the high electrical load led to a reduction in load on certain units to protect the electrical system. They noted that the gas processing units are managed by the National Petroleum Company and that the situation is under ongoing monitoring.

The ministry also mentioned that power may need to be cut to some non-residential areas if necessary to ensure the stability of the country’s electrical system.

The ministry also said any updates related to the status of the network will be announced through its official social media accounts. The statement also urged customers to conserve electricity during peak hours by following the ministry’s guidelines.
