Talha deportation prison moving to former juvenile facility in Sulaibiya

The fully renovated building can accommodate between 1,500 and 2,000 detainees in the men’s section, while the women’s section has a capacity of 500 detainees.

  • The new building in Sulaibiya area will include flight reservation offices, additional offices affiliated with the General Department of Criminal Evidence, two medical clinics ‘one for women and one for men’, as well as administration and other service offices.

Security sources revealed to Al Jarida newspaper that the General Administration of Correctional Institutions is set to receive the new deportation prison building in early October. A plan will be developed by the deportation prison administration to transfer prisoners from the old ‘Talha’ prison to the new facility.

The sources reported that the new prison will be located in the former Juvenile Prison Administration building in the Sulaibiya prison area, adjacent to the General Administration of Special Security Forces building. They indicated that the fully renovated building can accommodate between 1,500 and 2,000 detainees in the men’s section, while the women’s section has a capacity of 500 detainees.

The sources added that the new building will include flight reservation offices, additional offices affiliated with the General Department of Criminal Evidence, two medical clinics ‘one for women and one for men’, as well as administration and other service offices. They noted that the old deportation prison, ‘Talha,’ no longer meets security requirements and is suffering from severe dilapidation.

Additionally, the sources reported that the General Administration of Correctional Institutions has, for the first time, conducted academic tests for prisoners at all educational levels who were continuing their education during the evening period. This was done in cooperation with the Ministry of Education and the Farwaniya Educational District Administration.

Notably, inmates studying in high school were able to take their examinations inside the prison, including those in transfer classes who also successfully completed their tests.

The General Administration of Correctional Institutions is now awaiting a response from Kuwait University and the Public Authority for Applied Education to establish a mechanism that will allow inmates to continue their academic and technical education, in coordination with the General Administration of Correctional Institutions.

In a new development in the services provided by correctional institutions to inmates and their families, the General Administration of Correctional Institutions has introduced a new authorization form. This form allows an inmate to designate a relative to handle their transactions with any state ministry.

The Prison Security Department will provide a full report on the inmate’s case and the length of their sentence, which will be attached to the authorization and stamped by the correctional institutions. This will enable the relative to complete transactions on behalf of the inmate and their family with all state ministries.
