6.7-magnitude earthquake rocks Indonesia’s Tanimbar Islands

A powerful earthquake measuring 6.7 on the Richter scale struck Indonesia’s Tanimbar Islands region today morning, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) said.

The quake struck at approximately 11:20 AM IST at a depth of 110 kilometers beneath the Earth’s surface, according to data from India’s National Center for Seismology (NCS).

The epicenter was located at latitude 6.25° South and longitude 131.17° East, placing it in the seismically active Banda Sea region. The area frequently experiences tremors due to complex tectonic interactions between the Australian and Pacific plates, according to news reports.

Authorities have confirmed there is no threat of a tsunami following the earthquake. So far, no casualties or major structural damage have been reported.

Indonesia’s meteorology and geophysics agency (BMKG) is actively monitoring the situation and has urged residents to remain calm while staying alert to potential aftershocks.

Indonesia, part of the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” is prone to frequent seismic activity and volcanic eruptions, making earthquake preparedness and rapid response essential for public safety.
