‘Instagram Map’ feature instills fears of stalking, abuse

Meta’s launch of “Instagram Map,” allowing users to share their last active location, has ignited a wave of outrage, with critics warning it could expose sensitive geolocation data and put vulnerable users at risk.

Social media users have slammed the feature as “dangerous,” saying it could enable malicious tracking — especially for individuals with restraining orders or those seeking to hide their whereabouts.

Instagram CEO Adam Mosseri insists the tool is “off by default” and requires “double consent” before enabling location sharing, but some users claim their locations are being displayed without opting in.

The controversy has sparked a wider conversation about online privacy and the risks of real-time location sharing, as Meta races to reassure users and verify that no unwanted data is being exposed.
