Three people were killed and five others injured in a shooting at a high school in the central Philippines on Monday, police said, in a rare incident of gun violence on a school campus.
Police said two suspects were arrested following the shooting at San Jose National High School in Tacloban.
The shooting occurred at about 9:00 a.m. local time (0100 GMT) inside the school in Barangay San Jose, the Tacloban City Police Office said, adding that an investigation was underway to determine the motive and circumstances behind the attack.
Tacloban police chief Noelito Getigan told reporters the suspects used a .38-caliber handgun and a 9mm firearm.
One of the suspects, a minor and Grade 9 student, was arrested shortly after the incident, while the second suspect later surrendered to authorities, Getigan said.
Police said the injured victims were taken to nearby medical facilities for treatment. Additional security personnel were deployed to the school to ensure the safety of students, staff, parents and nearby residents, according to news agencies.
Authorities urged the public not to spread unverified information and to cooperate with investigators.
School shootings are uncommon in the Philippines, where such incidents occur only sporadically.
