135.4 million dinars tender for maintenance of main power substations referred to Audit Bureau
Electricity Ministry moves to upgrade high-voltage substations ahead of summer demand
On Thursday, the Ministry of Electricity, Water and Renewable Energy referred a tender valued at KD 135.40 million for the maintenance and repair of main power substations operating at 132, 300 and 400 kilovolts to the State Audit Bureau for review, auditing and approval. The Ministry said work will commence immediately once the Bureau raises no observations.
The tender forms part of the Ministry’s ongoing efforts to modernize and upgrade its facilities and components of the national electricity grid, extend their operational lifespan, and ensure readiness to meet the expected rise in electricity demand during the summer.
This increased demand, according to Al-Rai daily, is driven by the expansion of new residential cities, industrial zones and other housing developments.
The Ministry noted that the main substations targeted under the project are a vital element of the electricity network.
The 300 and 400 kilovolt transmission systems are responsible for carrying large volumes of power from generation plants to major consumption centers, in addition to ensuring full synchronization between power stations so that generators operate at identical rotational speeds.
Meanwhile, the 132-kilovolt transmission network plays a key role in transferring medium-capacity loads between high-voltage substations, supplying the distribution network and, in some cases, major consumers.
