China is expected to soon ban any clothing deemed offensive, according to new draft legal amendments. The proposed law stipulates that any speech or clothing that could be considered “harmful to the morale of the Chinese people” or that “harms the feelings of the nation” would be met with fines or even imprisonment.
But it does not specify, in particular, the types of clothing that could be banned under the new rules, reports Al-Rai daily.
A 23-year-old woman from Beijing said, “Determining who has decision-making authority and how to make provisions may require more time, and we must establish mature criteria for judgments before making proposals like this.”
She expressed her concern about the fact that the violations targeted by the law “are not as clear as crimes such as theft, where right and wrong are settled.”
A number of legal experts in China relied on the same justification in their protest against the amendments that were published earlier this month for public consultation, and the consultation deadline expires on September 30.
