U.S. backs $325m defense deal to boost Kuwait’s tank readiness, military modernization

The U.S. Embassy spokesman Stuart Turner has announced Washington’s strong support for the newly approved defense agreement with Kuwait, describing it as a “significant step” toward enhancing the technical readiness of Kuwait’s M1A2 and M1A2K main battle tanks.
Turner confirmed that the deal aligns with Kuwait’s goals to modernize and professionalize its armed forces, stating: “This agreement will contribute to strengthening the operational readiness of Kuwaiti forces,” reports Al-Jarida daily.
Turner emphasized the enduring nature of the U.S.-Kuwait defense partnership, which he said is rooted in “mutual commitment,” and reiterated the United States’ desire to remain Kuwait’s preferred partner not only in defense, but also in areas such as trade, investment, education, and culture.
The U.S. Department of State’s Defense Security Cooperation Agency recently disclosed that Kuwait has formally requested support for its existing M1A2 tank systems as well as its newer M1A2K Abrams tanks.
The $325 million deal includes equipment and services designed to bolster the operational efficiency of Kuwait’s tank fleet, which has served as the backbone of its ground forces for over 30 years.
