Meteorologist Issa Ramadan announced that the beginning of “Al-Barah Al-Awad” (Al-Barah Al-Kabir), astronomically associated with the rising of Al-Thurayya, will commence tomorrow, Sunday.
Ramadan explained that the Al-Bawarih winds occur in distinct phases. The first phase, known as the small Al-Bawarih (Al-Batin rise), extends from May 25 to June 6.
During this period, the region may or may not be affected depending on the strength of northwesterly winds and the Indian monsoon low-pressure system, which has shown variability in recent years.
He noted that the major Al-Bawarih season begins between June 7 and June 9 and continues until July 16. This phase includes the period known as Al-Tuwaibi’ (June 20 to July 2), characterized by intense heat and very hot winds.
The following stage, from July 3 to July 15, is referred to as the first Gemini period, during which Simoom winds become more frequent and summer temperatures rise sharply.
Ramadan added that the final phase of the season runs from July 16 to July 28, marking the closing days of the Al-Bawarih winds, with intensity and duration varying annually due to climate variability, sunspot activity, and the influence of the Indian monsoon system.
He further explained that these winds are rooted in Arab linguistic heritage, citing Ibn Manzur in Lisan al-Arab, who described them as strong, dust-laden northern winds occurring during the summer season.
From a meteorological perspective, he said the formation of the Indian monsoon low during early summer, combined with extreme heat and the sun’s position, contributes to the movement of dry, dust-laden air masses across desert regions into Gulf countries, increasing dust activity and arid conditions.
Looking ahead to the start of the week, Ramadan forecast scattered cloud cover and active northwesterly winds, with a likelihood of dust storms in exposed areas. Temperatures are expected to rise gradually, potentially exceeding 48°C and reaching up to 50°C over the weekend.
