Smart meters installations in schools, mosques enable MEW to manage remotely power usage

Dr. Al-Zamel participates in the opening session of ‘High-Level Dialogue on Regional Policies: Collaborative Pathways for Renewable Energy Solutions and Gateways for Hydrogen Trade’ conference.

The Ministry of Electricity, Water and Renewable Energy said the installation of smart electricity meters has been completed in approximately 95 percent of schools and mosques in the country. The remaining installations are expected to be finalized in the near future.

According to the ministry sources, these smart meters enable the ministry to efficiently manage electricity usage by remotely disconnecting power to schools after the school day ends and to mosques following each prayer, according to Al-Rai daily.

This measure aims to curb unnecessary energy waste. The sources emphasized the commitment of Minister Dr. Subaih Al-Mukhaizeem and senior ministry officials to implementing energy conservation policies, particularly during peak demand periods.

In another development, Dr. Adel Al-Zamel, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Electricity, Water and Renewable Energy, took part in the opening session of the Kuwait Sustainable Energy Conference. The session, titled “High-Level Dialogue on Regional Policies: Collaborative Pathways for Renewable Energy Solutions and Gateways for Hydrogen Trade,” focused on regional cooperation and Kuwait’s strategic vision for sustainable energy.

The discussion highlighted Kuwait’s national priorities in expanding renewable energy and advancing hydrogen technologies. A key point of the dialogue was the agreement with the Chinese government—represented by the State Power Investment Corporation (SPIC)—to develop the Shagaya and Abdaliya renewable energy projects, which together aim to generate over 3,000 megawatts of electricity.

Dr. Al-Zamel stated that Kuwait is targeting a total renewable energy production capacity of 4,800 megawatts by 2029, utilizing a diverse range of technologies. He stressed the importance of aligning energy transition strategies with the socio-economic needs of the region while protecting national interests.

He also identified the development of green and blue hydrogen as one of the most promising opportunities, leveraging the region’s abundant renewable and hydrocarbon resources.
