Over 16,000 citations recorded in a week following deployment of AI surveillance systems

Traffic violations in Kuwait have surged once again, driven by the widespread deployment of state-of-the-art cameras, along with the increased effectiveness of artificial intelligence surveillance systems.
According to statistics issued by the General Traffic Department for the period from May 17 to May 23, a total of 16,209 traffic violations were recorded, reports Al-Anba daily.
Despite the enforcement of the new traffic laws, road accident rates remain largely unchanged, with 1,409 accidents recorded during the week. Of these, 172 accidents resulted in injuries or fatalities, while 1,237 led to material damage only.
As part of ongoing traffic campaigns, officers arrested 36 juveniles for driving without licenses, referring them to the Juvenile Prosecution.
The vehicle owners were also summoned and issued citations. The campaigns also led to the arrest of 76 expatriates with expired residencies, 8 absconders, 1 residency violator, 1 street vendor, and 30 individuals wanted on arrest warrants.
Additionally, three people were detained for being in an abnormal condition, and two individuals were found in possession of narcotics and referred to the General Department for Drug Control.
Authorities also impounded 36 vehicles, seized 142 vehicles wanted by law — including 6 reported stolen, and one that had overturned in a collision; 135 vehicles were impounded for various violations, and 36 drivers were referred to traffic authorities for committing serious offenses.
A breakdown by governorate revealed the Capital Traffic Department issued the highest number of violations (5,174), followed by Ahmadi (3,841), Farwaniya (2,940), Jahra (1,920), Hawally (1,138), and Mubarak Al-Kabeer (595).
Other departments such as the Expressway Department issued 424 citations, the Tasks Department 114, and the Security Control Department 63.
