{"id":88470,"date":"2022-01-22T15:51:41","date_gmt":"2022-01-22T12:51:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/192.163.207.100\/~timesku1\/news\/?p=88470"},"modified":"2022-01-22T15:51:41","modified_gmt":"2022-01-22T12:51:41","slug":"airbus-cancels-6bn-contract-with-qatar-airways-after-paint-fight","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timeskuwait.com\/news\/airbus-cancels-6bn-contract-with-qatar-airways-after-paint-fight\/","title":{"rendered":"Airbus cancels $6bn contract with Qatar Airways after paint fight"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><em>Qatar Airways calls Airbus\u2019s decision \u2018a matter of considerable regret and frustration\u2019 amid a legal battle over peeling paint<\/em><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Airbus has cancelled a $6bn contract with Qatar Airways for 50 of its new A321neo passenger jets, escalating a legal battle between the two companies over paint on the recently delivered A350s.<\/p>\n<p>Qatar Airways called Airbus\u2019s decision announced on Friday \u201ca matter of considerable regret and frustration\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>In December, Airbus was taken to court by Qatar Airways in London, following a series of alleged problems with the Airbus A350 aircraft.<\/p>\n<p>The airline complained the paint on the recently delivered Airbus A350s was cracking and peeling, exposing copper meshing used to insulate the aircraft against lightning strike.<\/p>\n<p data-inc=\"1\">It is seeking more than $600m in compensation after grounding the affected aircraft \u2013 21\u00a0of its 53 A350 jets \u2013 claiming the paint issue is a safety risk.<\/p>\n<p>The deal was reportedly worth $6.35bn when it was finalised in December 2017.<\/p>\n<p>Qatar Airways published a video\u00a0on social media on Friday of the scarred exterior of grounded A350 jets that the airline said underscored \u201cserious and legitimate safety concerns\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The European Union Aviation Safety Agency independently assessed the issue and found no safety concerns.<\/p>\n<p data-inc=\"2\">\u201cThere is no reasonable or rational basis\u201d for Qatari regulators to have grounded the A350s operated by Qatar Airways, Airbus said in documents prepared for a London court hearing on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>It accused Qatar Airways of instigating the grounding as it was in its own financial interest to keep the aircraft on the ground in light of the coronavirus pandemic collapse in demand for air travel.<\/p>\n<p>Qatar Airways rejected the claims in a statement on Friday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese defects are not superficial and one of the defects\u00a0causes the aircraft\u2019s lightning protection system to be exposed and\u00a0damaged,\u201d it said.\u00a0\u201cWe continue to urge Airbus to undertake a satisfactory root\u00a0cause analysis into the cause of the defects.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-inc=\"3\">An investigation by Reuters news agency showed at least five other airlines reported A350 paint or skin flaws since 2016, well before Qatar raised concerns in November 2020 when an attempt to repaint a jet in World Cup livery exposed some 980 defects.<\/p>\n<p>Airbus has said it is looking at changing the design of anti-lightning mesh for future A350s, but insisted there is adequate backup lightning protection.
