Kuwaiti MP Mohammad Hayef on Tuesday presented a grilling motion against Minister of Finance Dr. Nayef Al-Hajraf. The motion involves allegations of law-breaking, abuse of power and irregularities. Article 100 of the Constitution grants every MP the right to grill the Prime Minister and other ministers on topics of their specialties.<\/p>\n
On 14 October, Islamist opposition MP Mohammad Hayef stated his desire to file a grilling motion against Finance Minister Nayef Al-Hajraf to question him on his backing of usury or interest rates on loans given to pensioners. Another issue the MP wanted to tackle was the use of interest by the Public Institute for Social Security that is overseen by the Finance Minister.<\/p>\n
The lawmaker approached the same issues in the previous Assembly term in June. The new grilling motion comes following the outcome of the Assembly Financial Committee meeting held on Sunday. The MP expressed his desire to do away with the present system of loans to pensioners, where a high-interest rate is levied on cash taken by pensioners in return for a part of their pensions. Many lawmakers have urged the minister and the government to\u00a0 abolish the interest and to introduce a new system in compliance with Islamic Sharia law.<\/p>\n
MP Mohammad Hayef made out the Finance Minister is breaching the country\u2019s constitution and laws by refusing to change his mind with regards to the issue.<\/p>\n
MP Riyadh Al-Adsani also expressed a similar interest to submit an interpellation against the Minister of Finance Nayef Al- Hajraf, which will cover points including the actuarial deficit, state budget, state investments, social security, and banks in which the government has shares.<\/p>\n
