{"id":20913,"date":"2019-09-02T15:03:39","date_gmt":"2019-09-02T12:03:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/192.163.207.100\/~timesku1\/news\/?p=20913"},"modified":"2019-09-02T15:03:39","modified_gmt":"2019-09-02T12:03:39","slug":"dubai-stops-work-on-largest-airport-in-world","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timeskuwait.com\/news\/dubai-stops-work-on-largest-airport-in-world\/","title":{"rendered":"Dubai stops work on largest airport in world"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"selectionShareable\">Work on Dubai\u2019s Al Maktoum Airport has stopped because the economies of the Gulf states are faltering,\u00a0<em>Bloomberg<\/em>\u00a0reported on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"selectionShareable\">The airport was designed to be one of the world\u2019s biggest, with an annual capacity of more than 250 million passengers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"selectionShareable\"><em>Bloomberg<\/em>\u00a0cited sources \u2013 who asked not to be named due to the sensitivity of the topic \u2013 saying that construction activity has been halted and finances for expansion frozen until further notice.<\/p>\n<p class=\"selectionShareable\">According to\u00a0<em>Bloomberg<\/em>, the completion date for the first phase of the airport \u2013 envisaged as a $36 billion super-hub allowing locally based airline\u00a0Emirates\u00a0to consolidate its position as the world\u2019s number one long-haul carrier \u2013 had already been pushed back five years to 2030 in October.<\/p>\n<p class=\"selectionShareable\">Dubai Airports\u00a0said in a statement made to\u00a0<em>Bloomberg<\/em>\u00a0that it is reviewing its long-term plan and that \u201cexact timelines and details of next steps are not as yet finalized\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"selectionShareable\">The statement also reported Dubai Airports\u00a0as saying that it aims to ensure development takes full advantage of emerging technologies, responds to consumer trends and preferences and optimises investment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"selectionShareable\">According to\u00a0<em>Bloomberg<\/em>, last year Dubai\u2019s economy grew at the slowest rate since 2010, as the Gulf\u2019s chief commercial centre grappled with fallout from geopolitical tensions and low oil prices.<\/p>\n<p class=\"selectionShareable\">Tourism has been stagnant since 2017, while Emirates Airlines remains based at the original Dubai International hub as it mulls how best to develop its strategy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"selectionShareable\">The company is\u00a0finding it tougher\u00a0to add profitable new routes, and is reworking its fleet plans with the cancellation of the Airbus SE A380 super-jumbo jet.<\/p>\n<p class=\"selectionShareable\">The newer airport, also known as Dubai World Central, opened in 2013. Annual capacity increased five-fold to 26.5 million last year following work on the passenger terminal; however, the number of actual customers was just 900,000.<\/p>\n<p class=\"selectionShareable\">Capacity was due to increase to 130 million passengers on completion of the first phase of expansion.
