Open Signal,\na company that specializes in mapping wireless coverage, conducted a study of\n80 countries that showed that mobile internet is faster than the average Wi-Fi\nhot spot in 33 countries. The list is not limited only to developing countries,\nin fact in countries such as Australia, Greece and Lebanon mobile broadband is\ngenerally 10 to 13 Mbps faster than the average Wi-Fi hot spot. The report\npoints to several reasons for the faster mobile speeds, like the ease of cell\ndeployment over laying cable<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But even in\nplaces where mobile broadband is faster and more readily available, like the\nUS, Singapore, and Hong Kong, Wi-Fi still leads mobile networks. The lingering\npopularity of Wi-Fi comes because, years ago, Wi-Fi was indeed faster and an\noverall better experience for the user. Moreover, most data plans charged significantly\nmore if users were to go over their monthly limits, and the 2G and 3G networks\nwere significantly slower than the LTE networks we experience today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
As\ndiscussions about 5G rollouts have begun to pick up, it may be time for device\nmakers to rethink this assumption. The new 5G networks will be even faster than\nLTE and may cause mobile broadband speeds to crest Wi-Fi in countries like the\nUS as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
