Lee could near Category 5-strength as it approaches the eastern Caribbean this weekend<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>and is still expected to be a dangerous hurricane over the southwestern Atlantic early next week. Lee\u2019s maximum forecast intensity of 155 mph would make it the strongest storm in the Atlantic basin this season. That forecast is also just 2 mph shy of Category 5.<\/p>\n<div data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/source\/instances\/source-h_25e302a1846a145537c5bcfc4da37b07@published\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_5E4C7DF0-D7CD-4973-D08E-6F9094A7CEB7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\" data-analytics-observe=\"off\">It\u2019s too soon to know whether this system will directly impact the US mainland, but even if the hurricane stays off the coast, dangerous surf and rip currents will threaten the Eastern Seaboard.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_2504D4CB-179F-B9D7-45E7-6EFB44835C0B@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\" data-analytics-observe=\"off\">There is increasing confidence that the center of Lee will pass to the north of the northern Leeward Islands, the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico this weekend and into early next week.
