{"id":134745,"date":"2023-07-29T12:56:20","date_gmt":"2023-07-29T09:56:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timeskuwait.com\/news\/?p=134745"},"modified":"2023-07-29T12:57:46","modified_gmt":"2023-07-29T09:57:46","slug":"au-demands-military-in-niger-return-to-barracks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timeskuwait.com\/news\/au-demands-military-in-niger-return-to-barracks\/","title":{"rendered":"AU demands military in Niger \u2018return to barracks\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The African Union has demanded the military in Niger \u201creturn to their barracks and restore constitutional authority\u201d within 15 days after grabbing power in a coup.<\/p>\n<p>The AU\u2019&#8217;s Peace and Security Council \u201cdemands the military personnel to immediately and unconditionally return to their barracks and restore constitutional authority, within a maximum period of fifteen (15) days,\u201d it said in a communiqu\u00e9 following a meeting Friday on the Niger coup, reports Al-Arabia News.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier General Abdourahamane Tchiani was believed to be the new leader of Niger following a military takeover, according to Niger state television Friday.<\/p>\n<p>The chief of the Presidential Guard has been named \u201cpresident of the National Council for the Safeguard of the Homeland,\u201d a statement said, with elected President Mohamed Bazoum detained by army putschists since Wednesday morning.<\/p>\n<p>Tchiani, appeared on state television on Friday to defend this week\u2019s coup, repeating that soldiers had acted to protect national security.<\/p>\n<p>Security has remained a problem since Bazoum was elected in 2021 as extremists who took root in neighboring Mali in 2012 gained ground, killing thousands and displacing over six million across West Africa\u2019s Sahel region.<\/p>\n<p>Niger is a key ally of Western countries in tackling extremist insurgencies<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The African Union has demanded the military in Niger \u201creturn to their barracks and restore constitutional authority\u201d within 15 days after grabbing power in a coup.
