The voting process for the second round of the presidential elections at the Turkish Embassy yesterday morning to elect a new president for the republic was smooth and the Turkish ambassador HE Touba Nur Sonmez thanked the Kuwaiti ministries of Interior and Foreign Affairs for facilitating the process for Turkish residents in Kuwait.

She explained these facilities contributed greatly helped the voters to participate in this democratic wedding, stressing that this reflects the strength and durability of bilateral relations between Turkey and Kuwait, reports Al-Rai daily.

The first round of the elections failed to give a clear cut victory to current president Recep Tayyip Erdogan and his rival Kemal Kilicdaroglu, as neither of them obtained the qualifying percentage for success, which is (50 + 1), pointing out that this round will be won by the one with the highest percentage of votes.

Sonmez praised the high turnout of the Turkish community at the polls in the first round, which was about 66 percent, which is the highest voter turnout in Kuwait compared to any previous elections, explaining that “the percentage reflects the embassy’s relentless efforts to spread awareness among the community and urge them to participate.”

She stated that “the elections took place in complete transparency and complete secrecy, as the voters cast their votes democratically, freely and smoothly, and it is like a democratic wedding for the Turks at home and abroad.”

She revealed that “about 5,000 Turks living in Kuwait are entitled to vote in the elections,” explaining that “the great participation of the people of our community reflects their great desire to participate in shaping the future of their country.”
