The US recorded almost 40,000 new coronavirus cases in the past 24 hours, which is the highest single-day spike in cases since the start of the pandemic.
Up to 39,972 new coronavirus cases were recorded in the US as the total number of cases nationwide reached 2,422,299, according to Johns Hopkins University.
The tally showed that 2,425 deaths were recorded in the past 24 hours bringing the total deaths to 124,410 deaths.
This comes as about 30 states across the US are witnessing a surge in coronavirus cases as hospitalizations are also spiking in several states.
Texas, Nevada, Florida, California, and Arizona have all recorded their highest single-day increase since the pandemic began.
