US FDA says ‘aspartame’ is safe, not carcinogenic

The US Food and Drug Administration, which approved aspartame decades ago, has issued an unusual criticism of the World Health Organization’s findings and reiterated its long-standing position that the sweetener “aspartame” is safe.

In a statement published by the American “New York Times”, the US Food and Drug Administration said that it “does not agree with the conclusion of the World Health Organization that studies support the classification of aspartame as a possible human carcinogen,” reports Al-Rai daily.

The report also added that “aspartame, which is prescribed by the World Health Organization just because it may be a human carcinogen does not mean that aspartame is actually linked to cancer.”
