United Nations Secretary-General Representative Tarek AlSheikh on Sunday praised the Kuwaiti government for its “positive” support extended to expatriate labour and business owners during the coronavirus pandemic.
The UN official, also Resident Coordinator in Kuwait, went on to commend the Kuwait Health Ministry’s efforts to educate people on the outbreak, namely issuing detailed instructions on the dos and don’ts, and the dangers surrounding the virus in multiple languages across several media platforms.
Governments, business owners and employees each have a decisive role in ending the crisis, he said, adding that cooperation was key to this, particularly efforts to limit the virus’ impacts on the economy. While governments are responsible for making decisions and offering the appropriate environment to keep people employed, businesses should offer safe and healthy workplaces and comply fully with labour laws, he said in a press statement a day ahead of World Day for Safety and Health at Work.
Ruba Jaradat, ILO Regional Director for Arab Countries, praised Kuwait’s commitment to developing labour health and safety checks and services in line with global standards.
