The Fatwa and Legislation cancels the decision to ban work permits for expatriates over 60

There is no legal basis to ban work permits for expatriates over 60 who hold high school diplomas and below, the Fatwa and Legislation committee announced today, Arabic daily Al Rai reported.

Director of manpower is not authorized to issue rules and procedures for granting permission to work. About 14 months after its issuance, the Fatwa and Legislation Department of the Council of Ministers blew up a big surprise by canceling the decision to ban the issuance of work permits for those holders of high school certificates 60 years and above.

The fatwa considered that the decision issued by the Director of the Manpower Authority in August 2020 does not exist legally, as it was issued by someone who is not competent to issue it, which marks it with the defect of lack of competence, and that the director of the authority is not authorized to issue rules and procedures for granting work permits

The earlier decision created a lot of public outcry and market instability with several sections of society calling for the decision to be reversed.

All those who had temporary residence permits will now be able to renew their residence permits into permanent ones.

The fees for the renewal has not yet been announced
