Rover finds doughnut-shaped rock on Mars

The NASA rover discovered a strange rock in the form of a round cake on the surface of Mars, in the form of a “doughnut” (round-shaped doughnuts).

This particular rock was spotted by NASA’s rover, which continues to explore the Jezero crater in Mars’ northern hemisphere which is likely to be a meteorite crashing into the red planet, reports Al-Rai daily.

The image was taken by the Remote Microscopy Imaging (RMI) instrument, part of the SuperCam instrument, at a distance of about 100 meters (328 feet) from the rover, on June 22, 2023.

Oddly shaped rocks are a common feature on Mars, and are the result of long periods of erosion, as they are on Earth. However, conditions on Mars prevent waterborne erosion, which means that most weathering is caused by wind and dust storms.

This is not the first time that such strange-looking rocks and formations have been found on the surface of Mars, by current and previous Mars rovers.

According to the scientific newspaper “Saens Alert”, it indicates that the donut rock “could be a large meteorite, along with smaller pieces.”
