Rapid vaccination rate may lead to herd immunity soon

The Ministry of Health announced that a total of 2,375,455 doses of the Covid 19 vaccine has been provided since the beginning of the campaign until Saturday. Due to the rapid vaccination rate, herd immunity is expected to be achieved soon, Al-Rai daily reported.

According to official figures, the daily vaccination rate in Kuwait is approximately 12,500 doses, as the campaign began on December 27, 2020, and the number of doses until July 3 reached 2.345 million (1 million and 452,148 people received one dose and 923,307 people received two doses).

This means that in 189 days of the campaign, an average of 12,568 doses id given per day, bearing in mind that this period witnessed many holidays during which the vaccine was not given.

Health sources told the daily that they expect that these numbers would mark the beginning of defeating the epidemic in the country, with access to herd immunity.

Herd immunity requires immunizing a segment of at least 3 million people to reach 70% of the country’s population, noting that according to the figures provided by the ministry’s statistics, which was announced recently, about 48% have received one dose, while the group that 31 percent is completely vaccinated.

It is likely that the vaccination of the third million will be completed by next September, before returning to school, bringing the percentage of those who have completed vaccination to about 50 percent. The sources expected a significant acceleration of the vaccination rate with the arrival of the Moderna and Johnson & Johnson vaccines in the last quarter of the year. This will allow the 3 million people to be vaccinated by the end of this year or early next year.
