More than 26,000 unemployed Kuwaitis despite Kuwaitisation

Public Authority for Civil Information issued the latest detailed data on population and employment statistics at the end of December 2022, showing that the total population in Kuwait reached about 4.737 million in December 2022, Al-Shall reports.

The population grew by 8%, compared to the end of 2021, amounting to about 4.386 million people (4.217 million people, according to the Central Administration of Statistics), with an absolute increase during 2022, of about 351.2 thousand people. The absolute decline of the whole of 2021 was about 285 thousand people, with a decline of 6.1% in 2021 compared to a decline of 2.2% in 2020.

In 2022, the Kuwaiti population increased by about 28.8 thousand people, with a growth rate of about 1.9%. This brought their total number to about 1.518 million people. According to the latest numbers, the percentage of Kuwaitis in the total population declined from 33.94% at the end of 2021, to 32.04%.

The weekly pointed out that the number of Kuwaiti females numbered around 773.1 thousand, exceeding the number of males, who come up to 744.4 thousand. The non-Kuwaiti population increased by 322.4 thousand people, or an increased rate of 11.1%, to reach about 3.219 million people, with a compound annual growth rate during 2013-2022 that amounted to around 1.9%.

The total number of workers in Kuwait came up to about 2.858 million workers, or about 60.3% of the total population, and the percentage of Kuwaitis reached about 31.7% of the total number of Kuwaitis. Note that the proportion of non-Kuwaiti workers out of the total non-Kuwaiti population amounted to about 73.8 %.

Al-Shall said that when comparing the numbers with the end of 2021, we find that the percentage of Kuwaiti workers out of the total number of workers in the country decreased from 18.1% to about 16.8% as in December 2022, and the percentage of female workers out of the Kuwaiti workforce stabilized at about 51.1% by the end of 2022 and as at the end of 2021. The percentage of female employment out of the total employment in Kuwait was 29.5%.

The number of Kuwaiti workers increased by about twelve thousand, to reach about four hundred and eighty-one thousand workers, up from about four hundred and sixty-nine thousand workers at the end of 2021, and the number of workers in the government reached about 380.6 thousand workers or 79.1% of the total number of Kuwaiti workers.

By the end of 2022, the number of unemployed Kuwaitis rose to 26.1 thousand workers, or 5.4% of the total number of Kuwaiti workers, compared to about 25.4 thousand workers, or 5.4% at the end of 2021.

The total number of workers (Kuwaiti and non-Kuwaiti) in the government sector amounted to about 492.9 thousand workers, approximately 10.4% of the total population. The percentage of Kuwaitis working in the government sector was 77.2%, according to the same source, although the official numbers from the source are not reliable.
