New Gulf Indian School Kuwait celebrated Onam 2019 on the theme, ‘Kerala’. The three-day celebrations started on 9 September with traditional games for the parents, while Uthradam day was celebrated with a sumptuous ‘Onasadya’ by the staff. Thiruvonam day on 11 September got off to a great start with a mesmerizing dance performance by the students of grade 6 and 7 followed by an Onam song by the students of grade 4. A skit based on the story of Mahabali, the benevolent Daitya king was also presented by the students of grade 4 to 7.
The Onam festival is celebrated in Kerala to mark the yearly homecoming of Mahabali, after being set down to the underworld Sutala by Vamana, the fifth avatar or incarnation of Lord Mahavishnu. Pookkalam (floral carpet) and tug of war were conducted as inter-class competitions. Gauri Nandana and Inara Khadeeja of grade 7 delivered the welcome speech.
