New device to aid recycling by turning plastic bags into bricks

A Texas-based company patented a process that compresses loose plastic bags into compact bricks. A device called the Soft Plastic Compactor (SPC) which was developed by Clear Drop can be used for discarded plastic bags and other “soft plastics” such as product packaging film that are oftentimes a challenge to separate and store for recycling and have a tendency to be blown off quite easily.

The device once filled compresses loads of plastic bags into a cube shape. It also melts a thin layer of plastic around the outside of the cube. The final result is a “brick” of compacted soft plastic waste, temporarily held together by a thin melted-plastic outer shell. A tuft of uncompressed plastic on top serves as a handle. The process, according to the company, keeps the SPC from releasing toxic fumes “above levels accepted by health regulations and standards” as the plastic is being melted.

The “brick” is then placed in a bin, then picked up and delivered to the local recycling depot, which the staff will break open to sort non-melted plastic bags inside. The company said the device will only be sold in the market through the coordination of recycling facilities, but it will be available for pre-order next year.
