Name of new GCC Secretary-General to be announced today

The Secretary-General of the Gulf Cooperation Council, Dr. Nayef Al-Hajraf, will complete his term in early February 2023 and the name of the new Kuwaiti candidate to assume the second term of the secretariat will be announced today during the forty-third session of the Supreme Council of the Cooperation Council for the Arab States of the Gulf.

Diplomatic sources told a local Arabic daily that the Gulf summit meeting scheduled for today will adopt the name of the new Secretary-General and the Assistant Secretaries-General, noting that according to the statute, the GCC countries nominate their representatives every 3 years.

And the sources stated that it is customary for the Secretary-General to hold the position for two terms, each of 3 years duration.

The sources added, the Kuwaiti Foreign Minister Sheikh Salem Al-Abdullah Al-Sabah has informed the Gulf foreign ministers during the preparatory meeting for the summit on Wednesday of Kuwait’s desire to nominate a new representative to assume the position of Secretary-General to succeed Dr. Nayef Al-Hajraf.
