Livestock breeders demand increase in subsidy, protest closure of grazing sites

Disgruntled livestock breeders staged a sit-in in front of the National Assembly. They were protesting the closure of grazing areas for their animals and the restrictions imposed on lawful owners, and demanded for an increase in subsidies, due to the high prices of fodder.

During the protest, according to a local Arabic daily, the breeders expressed their dissatisfaction about random decisions, stressing that they harm the environment, while livestock is one of the main components of food security and its existence is sustainable for the environment.

They demanded a reconsideration of the issue of subsidies for animal feed, and special places for grazing, stressing the lack of places for grazing, despite the vast open areas which is needed by livestock.

In a related context, a member of the Municipal Council, Fahid Al-Muwaizri, said that he submitted a proposal to allocate permanent lands for grazing, in coordination with the concerned authorities.

He described the decisions to close some open areas to prevent grazing as “bad” in terms of form and timing.
