Lebanese and Indian vegetables and fruit imports to be monitored

Indian and Lebanese vegetables and fruits imports will be closely monitored by the Ministry of Trade and Commerce (MoCI), who since yesterday began checking the stocks of vegetables and fruits available in the local market, Al Rai daily reported.

The sources revealed that verbal instructions were issued to continue to allow the vegetable and fruit imports from Lebanon by sea and air at the present time, with tightening controls, and increasing checks.  The Lebanese authorities are urged by the Kuwait authorities to work to ensure that their exports are free of any illicit substances that would prompt a ban against further imports to Kuwait.

Earlier, Kuwait Foreign Ministry expressed full support to Saudi Arabia’s decision to ban the entry of vegetables and fruits imports from Lebanon as they are a means for drug smugglers to hide drugs in the exports.

In a statement, the Ministry stated the Saudi sovereign decision comes within the framework of Kingdom’s keenness to prevent illegal drugs from entering its lands and to protect Saudi citizens from it.

The ministry concluded its statement by calling on Lebanese authorities to work to ensure that their exports are free of any prohibited materials that would compel authorities to ban further imports.

Meanwhile, the sources suggested to the daily that the monitoring of Indian commodities is a fallout of the high new coronavirus infection rates, and the country is following up on developments in this regard.
