Kuwait’s science, engineering contest important for students – Oil Minister

Minister of Oil, and Minister of Electricity and Water Khaled Al-Fadhel affirmed on Tuesday the importance of Kuwait’s science and engineering competition organized by Kuwait Science Club (KSC) in supporting scientific research.

Al­-Fadhel made the press statement following a closing ceremony of the competition which was supported by the Kuwait Foundation for the Advancement of Sciences, the Ministry of Education, Kuwait University, the Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research and the Public Authority for Applied Education and Training as well as the American University of the Middle East and Al­Kharafi Group.

The officials developed the annual competition, which targets male and female students of high schools to practice scientific research and engineering design called “innovation,” he said.

The number of participants has risen to 130 in the seventh edition of the contest, which includes the scientific research and the engineering design categories, he added. Meanwhile, head of KSC’s competitive programs and development sector Mohammad Al­Safar stressed the club’s keenness on adopting and encouraging youth to innovation and scientific research, referring to the event’s importance in investing in human capital.

The contest includes 22 scientific fields suitable for all ages, as knowledge economy requires a generation able to development and self­reliance, he said.

Also, Education Ministry’s Undersecretary for educational development and activity sector Faisal Al­-Meqseed affirmed the ministry is eager to focus mainly on research and scientific activities to students as part of its strategies in disseminating technology and sciences.

He said the ministry is also keen on backing talented students in all fields so as to promote knowledge and scientific research.

Thirty students won in the science and engineering category, while three secondary schools obtained the first two positions in the scientific research domain.
