Kuwaiti ministry shines light on perils of addiction

Undersecretary of the Kuwaiti Ministry of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs Fareed Amadi.

Kuwait seeks to establish a closer rapport with international bodies in efforts to fight the dangers of addiction, said an official on Monday.

Social ills such as addiction are destructive habits that are as much detrimental to the society as they are to the abusers themselves, the undersecretary of the Kuwaiti Ministry of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs Fareed Amadi said amid a forum on halfway houses in the Arab Gulf region.

The gathering is an opportunity for these rehab institutions to work closer together to ensure that people with physical or mental disabilities get the support they need, said the forum’s secretary general Dr. Nasser AlAjmi.

According to official statistics, some 257 inmates had been transferred to a halfway house in the last two years.
