Kuwait witnesses many achievements in ’18

Sheikh Jaber Al-Ahmad Cultural Center (JACC) was awarded as the Cultural and Heritage Project of the Year at the 2018 MEED.

Kuwait witnessed many achievements at the local level in 2018. Following are major achievements throughout the year.

April 4: Kuwait Oil Tanker Co. (KOTC) was awarded for the development of the infrastructure of shipping industry.

April 7: Kuwaiti poet Abdulaziz Al­Babtain won the Portuguese order of the republic in recognition of his efforts to promote the culture of peace. April 7: “Our Shared Planet” motorcycle adventures team won the award of world travel festival 2018 in Milan, Italy.

April 14: Dr. Mishari Al­Mutairi won the golden award of the International Exhibition of Inventions of Geneva for inventing the technique to rehabilitate soil polluted with oil.

April 24: Kuwait Municipality won the Special Achievement in GIS (SAG) Award, offered by the Environmental Systems Research Institute (Esri), for its project to promote the application of the Geographic Information System (GIS).

April 25: Kuwait won the bronze medal of the trap competition of the 2018 ISSF World Cup, organized by the International Shooting Sport Federation in the Republic of South Korea.

April 28: Mohammad Al­Harbi, a Kuwaiti poet, won the top award of the Katara Prize for Prophet’s Poets organized by Qatar’s Cultural Village Foundation, for his poem ‘Kaabet AlOshaq’ (the lovers’ Kaaba).

May 3: Kuwait Aviation Fueling Company (KAFCO) was awarded for excellence in human resources management on the level of the Middle East and North Africa.

May 7: Ministry of Finance was honored by the Dubai­based Arabian Business as the best government center in media and social communication in 2018.

May 8: Kuwait National Child Protection Committee was awarded by the global child protection association as the world’s best multi­sectoral team.

May 14: Manal Al­Mesallam, a Kuwaiti female volunteer, is honored as hope maker by the Arab Hope Makers initiative, launched by UAE Vice President and Ruler of Dubai Sheikh Mohammad bin Rashed Al Maktoum.

May 20: France granted the Order of Academic Palms (Ordre des Palmes academiques), Knight (Chevalier) class, to Secretary General of the National Council for Culture, Arts and Literature (NCCAL) Ali Al­Youha in recognition of his efforts to promote cultural exchanges between France and Kuwait.

May 23: The Petrochemical Industries Company (PIC), a subsidiary of Kuwait Petroleum Corporation, was awarded the Responsible Care for “Product Stewardship” by Gulf Petrochemicals and Chemicals Association (GPCA).

June 3: Sheikh Jaber Al­Ahmad Cultural Center (JACC) was awarded as the Cultural and Heritage Project of the Year at the 2018 MEED (Middle East Economic Digest) Projects Awards.

June 4: Assistant Undersecretary of the Ministry of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs Dr. Waleed AlShu’aib was honored as the world Islamic personality of the year in recognition of his efforts to serve the Holy Quran teaching.

June 6: Russia granted Bader Mohammad Al­Saad the Order of Friendship in recognition of his efforts to cement the Kuwaiti­Russian relations. July 10: Adel Al­Wusais won the gold medal for his invention, Safety Belt, at Malaysia International Invention exhibition.

July 11: Environment Public Authority (EPA) won the outstanding achievement award in Geographic Information System for its Environment information system project.

Aug. 5: Yusuf Al­Rifaee climbed the highest volcano summit in Oceania, amounting to 4,367 meters and hoisted Kuwait’s flag, the first Arab to reach the peak. Aug. 19: Naji Al­Hai won the creativity award in the “Power of Art” exhibition in Rome, Italy.

Aug. 20: Global Finance central banks’ annual report named Kuwait’s Central Bank governor Mohammad Al­Hashel on top in the Gulf region, and among the top four in the Middle East and North Africa. Sept. 2: Kuwait won an international award for support right of the child.

Sept. 18: Erasmus University Colleague Brussels awarded a certificate for Kuwait’s surgeon Hussain AlHarbi in the joint endoscopy. Oct. 3: Kuwait Institute for Social Security won distinction award in a forum in Malaysia.

Oct. 14: University of California honored Director General of Kuwait Foundation for Advancement of Science Dr. Adnan Shihab Al­Din for his scientific achievements in Kuwait and Arab world.

Oct. 17: Kuwait MP Safa Al­Hashem was elected vice­chairman of Inter­Parliamentary Union’s (IPU) Standing Committee on UN Affairs. Oct. 14: Sheikh Abdullah Al­Salem Cultural Center won the Middle East and North Africa’s best public facility building design award for 2018.

Nov. 3: Kuwait engineer Mishal Al­Otaibi won the best architecture research award, during a conference in the US. Nov. 5: Kuwait won a seat in the international telecommunications union.

Nov. 5: Kuwaiti surgeon Mishal Al­Jarba registered a patent for inventing a device facilitating surgeries.

Dec. 1: Kuwait University announced a patent in towing.

Dec. 2: France decorated deputy head of Kuwait National Guard (KNG) Sheikh Mishal AlAhmad Al­Sabah with Legion of Honor, the order for military and civil merits.

Dec. 7: Kuwaiti veteran actress Saud Abdullah won the 2018 Arab Woman of the Year Award for her contributions to drama in Arab world.

Dec. 11: Kuwait National Petroleum Company’s (KNPC) CEO Mohammad Al­Mutairi won the best CEO for 2018 award, offered by Petroleum Economist Magazine. Dec. 16: MP Rakan Al­Nisf won the distinguished parliamentary award of the Arab InterParliamentary Union (AIPU).
