Kuwait receives suspected remains belonging to Kuwaiti prisoners of Iraq

The State of Kuwait received Wednesday remains suspected of belonging, according to initial information, to Kuwaiti prisoners who were captured by Iraqi forces during their 1990- 91 invasion and occupation of Kuwait, a foreign ministry official said. The identities of the remains will be examined by forensic experts who will conduct a DNA testing “and who are doing a very important job in this humanitarian issue,” Rabee Al-Adsani, chairman of the ministry’s Prisoners and Missing, said.

Speaking to KUNA during the acceptance of remains, Al-Adsani said examining identities of remains was “a complicated process which should be accurate and needs time to extract the DNA from the remains and match them with data of prisoners and check the remains before announcing the identity.” He said extensive search and verification of information related to file of Kuwaiti prisoners and missing would continue through the technical and tripartite committees “until closure of this humanitarian file.”

Al-Adsani thanked the International Committee of Red Cross (ICRC), the Iraqi government, Saudi Arabia, Britain, France and UN for their commitment to solving this issue. Al-Adsani signed the documents of the handover. Kuwait’s Embassy in Baghdad said earlier today it received remains of 21 persons presumably belonging to Kuwaiti citizens missing during Iraq’s 1990-91 invasion of Kuwait.
