Kuwait provides Omani power network with 100 megawatts

Undersecretary of the Ministry of Electricity and Water, Eng Khalifa Al-Farij, said that Kuwait provided the Sultanate of Oman today with 100 megawatts through the Gulf interconnection network, for a full hour.

Al-Farij told a local Arabic daily the Kuwaiti contribution came after the electricity network in the Sultanate was exposed to a defect that led to a loss of 3,800 megawatts, which resulted in power outages in a number of parts of the Sultanate.

He added that the Gulf interconnection secures the GCC countries to overcome any defect faced by their respective local networks in the least possible time.

The GCC Interconnection Authority was established in 2001 as a joint stock company to connect the infrastructure of member states at the level of electricity and water.

Kuwait has benefited from the authority’s cooperation protocol several times, as it was supplied with electricity to maintain the stability of the network in times of crisis, and the Kuwaiti network similarly contributed to providing a number of networks of member states with the necessary energy.

According to data issued by the authority, the Gulf interconnection contributed to achieving savings for member states estimated at about $3 billion over the past ten years, and prevented nearly 2,000 power outages in member states.
