Kuwait largest importer of gas in the Middle East

Kuwait has become the largest and most important market for importing natural gas in the Middle East and North Africa region thanks to the LNG terminal in the Al-Zour region, which began operating in early July 2021, with an estimated design capacity of about 22 million tons per year, according to a specialized report issued by the Organization of Arab Petroleum Exporting Countries (OAPEC).

The report indicated that Kuwait imported natural gas during the second quarter of 2022 about 2 million tons, and about 1.9 million tons during the third quarter, bringing the total that the country imported through Al-Zour port during the first nine months of 2022 to about 4.8 million tons, so that was a new record for Kuwait — total imports of liquefied natural gas by the end of 2022, reports Al-Qabas daily.

The report pointed out that the majority of Kuwait’s imports of natural gas came from three main destinations:

— Qatar accounted for 45%

— Nigeria 24%.

— The United States of America 11%
