Kidnapping every day; 948 cases received from March 2019 to August 2021

With a crime happening at least one every day, the Ministry of Interior confirmed that 948 reports of kidnappings were received from the beginning of March 2019 until August 16, 2021.

The ministry said, this was in response to a question by MP Mohalhal Al-Mudhaf, a copy of which has been obtained by a local Arabic daily, on the issue of kidnapping known as the ‘iPad,’ and one of the securitymen accused of facilitating kidnapping said 392 cases of abetted kidnapping cases have been referred to the Public Prosecution.

As for the case referred to in Al-Mudhaf’s question, the Ministry of the Interior confirmed that “the necessary investigations were carried out as soon as the report was received, and the accused were arrested and referred to the Public Prosecution.

The cases, in which policemen may arrest without a warrant, are mentioned in the texts of Articles (53, 54, 55, 56, 57) of Law (17) of 1960 related to the issuance of the Code of Procedures and Criminal Trials.

The sources stated that the person responsible for following up on the violations committed by the detectives, according to the structure and organizational guide issued by Ministerial Resolution No. 2411 of 2008, the Criminal Security Affairs Sector, and the General Administration of Control and Inspection, pointed out that “the act committed by the Ministry’s employees in the incident referred to by asking the member was outside scope of work, and at their personal disposal.”

The ministry stressed it spares no effort in taking the necessary measures to combat crime in all its forms, through security campaigns and patrols, to apprehend violators of the law, collect information, conduct investigations about crime if it occurs and arrest perpetrators, collect evidence related to it, in addition to awareness campaigns on such risks.
