India successfully test fires advanced anti-craft Akash Prime missile

India announced on Monday that it has successfully test-fired anti-aircraft surface-to-air ‘Akash Prime’ missile. The Defense Ministry said in a statement that a new version of the Akash Missile; Akash Prime has been successfully flight tested from Integrated Test Range in Chandipur city of the eastern Indian state of Odisha today.

“The missile intercepted and destroyed an unmanned aerial target mimicking enemy aircrafts, in its maiden flight test after improvements,” the defense ministry said. Explaining Akash Prime’s uniqueness, the statement said that it is equipped with an indigenous active radio frequency seeker for improved accuracy and it has advanced and “reliable performance under low-temperature environments at higher altitudes.” India has begun its efforts to develop the Akash missile system in the eighties of the last century in order to protect its border regions from neighboring Pakistan and China.
