India’s Ministry of Health said on Sunday that 1,301 lives have been lost to COVID-19 so far while the number of infections climbed to 39,980 cases.

There were 83 deaths and 2,644 infections over the last 24 hours. Out of the total infected cases, 10,633 people have been discharged from hospital after having recovered, added the ministry.

Maharashtra, in the west, is still the worst affected Indian state with 521 deaths and 12,296 cases followed by the northwestern state of Gujarat, with 262 deaths and 5,054 cases.

Authorities have recently extended a nationwide lockdown for another two weeks as they scramble to contain the spread of the virus.

The entire nation has been divided into red, orange and green zones taking into account the severity of the outbreak.

Regions which fall under green and orange are under fewer constraints even though several restrictions have been strictly implemented across the nation.
