Indian Ministry of Health and Family Welfare said on Sunday that there were 9,971 new positive cases as COVID-19 deaths in one day were an alarming 287.
The health ministry said in its update that COVID-19 death toll so far surged to 6,929 while the total number of positive cases rose to 246,628 and 119,293 people recovered and there are 120,406 active cases.
Maharashtra, New Delhi, Gujarat and Tamil Nadu are the worst hit Indian states as the deadly virus spread to 35 states.
The Indian government announced its decision to extend the lockdown in containment zones while giving key relaxations in the less affected areas.
