Iftar meals at mosques to be banned

In an extension of the precautionary measures being taken to reduce the risk and spread of COVID-19 infections, a ban is likely to be imposed on mass Iftar meals at mosques and other venues during the holy month of Ramadan.

The proposal to ban mass iftar meals was proposed by the Minister of Justice and Minister of Awqaf Dr. Fahd Al-Afasi during a meeting with the senior officials of the ministry. Rather than have people congregate in mosques, packaged meals will be distributed to individuals by the concerned organizations.

Following the meeting, Dr. Al-Afasi also issued orders to do away with volunteers during the Ramadan period as they would no longer be needed due to the closure of mosques. He added that the ministry would send across the message through publication on social media platforms and satellite channels. He also stressed that clerics should take the initiative and educate the public on the proper health safety precautions to be followed during the virus crisis.
