Gulf Electrical Interconnection Expansion project on the roll

Under the auspices of the Prime Minister, His Highness Sheikh Ahmed Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah, and in the presence of the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development Sheikh Salem Al-Abdullah, the Electricity Interconnection Authority for the Gulf Cooperation Council is holding a ceremony to start implementing the Gulf electrical interconnection expansion project with Kuwait, as part of a Gulf link expansion project, on Dec 22, 2022.

The project aims, according to a local Arabic daily, to enhance the transfer and exchange of electrical energy between the GCC countries. The project will also contribute significantly to strengthening the Kuwait electricity network and increasing its reliability to ensure the sustainability of electrical energy security and avoid interruptions at all times.

Kuwait will be the largest beneficiary of the project, as the capacity supporting the electricity grid in Kuwait will be raised to about 3,500 megawatts, which will raise the operational efficiency of the Kuwaiti network.

The project will also enable the Electricity Interconnection Authority to supply electric power from the GCC countries to southern Iraq, as it will be provided with an electric capacity of 500 megawatts. In addition, the project will contribute to achieving a number of sustainable goals in the field of environmental health and well-being.
