Giant diamond found in Russia

The Russian company Alrosa, which is one of the largest diamond mining companies in the world, revealed a rough diamond weighing 309.7 carats, equivalent to approximately 78 grams has been extracted from the Yakutia region, located in the far north of the country.

The diamond is the most prominent discovery among the high-quality diamonds extracted from the company’s mine over the past 10 years.

According to a statement issued by the Russian company, this discovery represents “a light-colored crystal of an unusual shape, bordered by a yellow-brown halo, which is a unique combination of mass, shape, and color today.”

The statement stated that in 2013, the largest diamond of gem quality was found, and it weighed 401 carats.

He added, “In addition to the new giant diamond, another large, colorless diamond weighing 37.7 carats with a classic octagon shape was also found.”

He explained that these two crystals were sent for experts to evaluate their properties.

For his part, Alrosa General Director Pavel Marinichev said: “Without a doubt, the discovery of one of the largest diamonds in the history of Russia. It is an unprecedented event and an excellent end to the work season in 2023.”

It is noteworthy that “Alrosa” produces up to 4 percent of the total production of rough diamonds in the world, and the company’s mines are located in Yakutia and the Arkhangelsk region.
