Former undersecretary, 3 others get jail term

The Court of Cassation sentenced a former undersecretary, a merchant and two employees to 7 years in prison, and fined them $6 million, for selling endowment land to Kuwait in Azerbaijan intended for the establishment of an Islamic institution.

The court convicted the four defendants of bribery and facilitating the appropriation of public money from the funds of the International Charitable Organization, and obligated them all to return the amount of two million dollars and fined them $4 million, obliging the first and second defendants to return the amount of 70 thousand dinars, and fining them the amount of 140 thousand dinars, and obliging the second accused to return the amount of 10 thousand Dinars, and a fine of 20,000 dinars, and a fine of 57,450 dinars for the first and fourth, and ordered the deportation of the second accused from the country, after executing the sentence imposed, reports Al-Rai daily.

The Public Prosecution charged the first and second defendants, in their capacity as the first public employee, undersecretary of the Ministry of Endowments and a member of the Board of Directors of Asia Muslims of the International Islamic Charitable Organization, and the second in the judgment of the public employee – director of the organization’s office in the Republic of Azerbaijan, that they facilitated for the third and fourth defendants the unlawful seizure of $6 million.
